Internship-Mission and Vision Statement

"Learning for Life (L4L) is a research-based, multi-faceted community and college partnership that links students to a network of services, supports and opportunities. This collaborative work fortifies students for college success and removes any challenges that they may encounter in keeping college a central priority in their lives. The L4L staff team includes networks of peer mentors/advocates called Navigators, who are supported by Lead Navigators, three Educational Support Facilitators, a Data Specialist, an Assistant Director and a Director. The L4L community is about resilience and excellence, moving side-by-side with students to meet the challenges in becoming a college graduate."

They also have this statement located on the home page. I think this is a shortened version but does not really explain who is involved.

"We’re about Resilience and Excellence. Begun in 2012, L4L is a network of resources at RIC that links students to a  wide range of services, supports, and opportunities for college success, and to remove any challenges and obstacles that may get in the way. L4L is a network of resources to help students navigate through any challenges on the way to graduation!

In my own words, I would describe Learning for Life as a support center for the entire student body. They offer a various amount of services mostly for undergraduates but also allows graduate students to use this space for their internship. They are gaining professional experience and make those connections with the RIC community.
I think that they could shorten their current statement to make it more student friendly. I was actually on the taskforce to help re-create some of the online pages to make the website more student friendly. Their language could be changed around to make it easier for them to navigate through it.

  1. Thanks for your post Leidy. I agree the language could definitely be more student friendly! Also, this phrase sticks out to me in particular, "removes any challenges that they may encounter in keeping college a central priority in their lives." Wouldn't it be lovely if any organization could actually do that? Remove the obstacles--poverty, family struggles, dis/abilities, structural racism and oppression? I wonder if there's another way that L4L could communicate the spirit of this goal?

  2. Thanks, for sharing! I like how you rephrased the mission statement by stating "It's a center for the entire student body".

  3. I totally agree with you (and Victoria). The language can be shorter and student-friendly. However, their mission statement is all true. I previously reached out for financial assistance at LFL, and the staff was utterly helpful

  4. Personally, I understand why their mission statement is so long and complex and that's because they work with everything students may have difficulty with. Being someone who is part of L4L they helped me significantly to get back on my own two feet and stand on the ground strongly. I've never met an org. that did something amazing like this. I wouldn't be where I am today if it wasn't for there help.
I also do agree with everyone that the language is complex and could be more simplified and student friendly.
